What kind of research do text designers need? Much of the practical research in text design can be characterized as testing-the aim is to verify whether a given document is effective or not. Effectiveness may be defined in terms of acceptability, persuasiveness, usability or otherwise. Testing is of direct relevance for the actual practice, but, of course, test results cannot usually be generalized.
