ABSTRACT
Forest biotechnology includes a number of technologies such as cell culture, enzyme production to improve or obtain a product, and recombinant DNA technology. In this chapter, biotechnology for the production of transgenic trees with improved silvicultural characteristics will be covered. The various traits obtained by recombinant DNA methods, the tissue culture aspects and the gene transfer procedures to produce transgenic trees will be discussed. The main goal of this type of technology is to increase the productivity of managed forests while providing environmentally sound methods for the sustainable management of forest resources.
