ABSTRACT

A huge number of organisms, at least during part of their life cycle, benefit from habitation at interfaces and have developed particular means to hold themselves at the interface. Sessile organisms, examples of which are seen among crustaceans, mollusks, actinaria, porifera, algae and microorganisms, flourish in an aquatic environment and are supported by their unique holdfasts, although examples of biotic holdfasts are limited. This review article is intended to provide an overview of recent advances in the study of barnacle underwater adhesives.
