ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the current state of the art in using qualitative methodologies to illuminate and develop the theory and practice of the patient-centered clinical method. Investigation undertaken in the critical paradigm presents researchers with the opportunity to achieve both qualitative understanding and quantified generalizable results about human experiences of social injustices, particularly the unconscious or hidden exercise of power and control contained in social relationships. Qualitative methodologies are helpful in gaining a greater understanding of the needs, motives, and expectations of patients. Of equal importance to understanding patients’ illness experience is exploring their knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes toward health. Understanding the patient as a whole person invites the application of qualitative research methodologies to elicit a more in-depth picture of the larger life context than is immediately apparent.
