- Bridge Engineering in Finland
Finland began to build roads during the late Middle Ages. e rst important bridges were built over the rivers and straits of Finnish lakes when the main road from the Russian border to west cost was built. e road was called the King’s Road, and wood was the main material for the bridges because of its availability and low costs. ere were also skilled carpenters just for bridge construction. e problem with wooden bridges was the short life span of the materials and work amount needed oen for repair of the damages. One of the most interesting wooden bridges was built in Oulu in 1867 (Figure 10.1). e spans of the bridge were 38.1 m + 45.7 m + 38.1 m. e bridges served until the year 1950.
