ABSTRACT

Although a significant volume of research is focused on human exposure to ambient air pollutants, it should be realised that air pollutants may be respon sible for other adverse environmental effects. Destruction of crop plants, visibility reduction and damage to historic buildings are all consequences of atmospheric pollution, which must be considered alongside the impact on human health. Damage to buildings is likely to be significant where there is a large outdoor supply of pollutants. Therefore, buildings located in busy urban centres may be particularly susceptible.
