A study was set up to quantify the long-term consequences of stone cleaning. This required a very large number of fagades to be surveyed (146 fagades from four different cities). As a consequence, the techniques used until now for

mapping building facades had to be adapted to make maximum use of resources, in terms of staff time and speed of data acquisition in the field, without the need for expensive equipment or learning complex computer software techniques.
