The African trypanosome, Trypanosoma brucei, is an important cause of human suffering in sub-Saharan Africa, infecting an estimated 500,000 people. The disease is fatal if untreated and is currently considered a category 1 (emerging or uncontrolled) disease by the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) (World Health Organization, www.who.int). The parasite also infects livestock, greatly impacting both nutrition and agriculture in endemic areas.
