ABSTRACT

Among their many other roles, cells in solid tissues function to stabilize or actuate tissues mechanically. In organs such as the heart, kidney, and lungs, cells such as smooth muscle cells and broblasts function in part to develop and dene shape and structure. Cells in these tissues also serve dynamic functions such as muscle contraction and wound healing. Understanding many of the important functions of these tissues therefore requires an understanding of the mechanical properties and functioning of the cells that comprise them.
