ABSTRACT
The immune system, as other systems, follows an orderly pattern of development following conception and continues to develop after birth. Immaturity of host defense mechanisms makes neonates susceptible to a wide variety of microbial pathogens. The more premature the infant, the greater the risk, as they have a less well-developed immune system and a greater need for invasive intensive care. Once infected, neonates become rapidly and seriously ill.
