ABSTRACT
A common dilemma for the clinician is the differentiation of cardiac and respiratory disease. Acquired heart failure in children tends to be recognized late, since in its early stages it is often mistaken for respiratory disease. This is perhaps not surprising since the pulmonary and cardiovascular systems are so closely inter-related. Abnormalities of the heart inevitably affect pulmonary function just as abnormalities of the lungs will affect cardiac function.
