Synthesis of 2,3:4,5-di-O-isopropylidene-d-Arabinose from d-Gluconolactone

Being involved in the synthesis of higher carbon sugars with more than 10 carbon atoms in the chain by coupling of two properly activated monosaccharide building blocks,6 we were interested in the efcient preparation of carbohydrate aldehydes. We have found that multigram quantities of 2,3:4,5-di-O-isopropylidene-d-arabinose (4) can be conveniently prepared following the odorless, three-step synthesis described in the following, which can be carried out from d-gluconolactone without any chromatographic purication (Scheme 23.2).7
