Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of disease in human populations. It maps the frequency of disease and identifies people at higher or lower risk of contracting particular conditions. Once risk factors are confirmed, their impact can be reduced. Studies linking cigarette smoking with lung cancer, and hypertension with stroke, sparked successful campaigns to limit smoking and lower blood pressure. Ideally, epidemiological studies will identify reversible triggers to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other dementias.
