Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI) estimates that there are 30 million people with dementia worldwide (ADI, 2008). For approximately 75-80 per cent of persons with dementia (PWD) who live in the community, care is provided informally by unpaid carers (Schulz and Martire, 2004), typically family members, but also friends and neighbours. In 2007 there were at least 10 million people in the United States caring for a friend or family member with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) or another dementia (Alzheimer’s Association, 2007) and in the UK carers looked after approximately 700 000 PWD (Personal Social Services Research Unit London School of Economics, 2007).
