dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is now the preferred term (McKeith et al., 1996) for a variety of clinical diagnoses including diffuse LB disease (DLBD) (Kosaka et al., 1984; Dickson et al., 1987; Lennox et al., 1989), LB dementia (LBD) (Gibb et al., 1987), dementia associated with cortical Lewy bodies (DCLB) (Byrne et al., 1991), the LB variant of Alzheimer’s disease (LBVAD) (Hansen et al., 1990; Fo¨rstl et al., 1993), and senile dementia of LB type (SDLT) (Perry et al., 1990). Figure 64.1 provides a simple schematic of the relationship between the various Lewy body terminologies recommended currently and consistency of use is essential to a full understanding of the disorder. This chapter considers the evolution of diagnostic concepts and methods; the pathology and management of DLB are considered in subsequent chapters.
