ABSTRACT
In the title of this section, opals are referred to as “brilliant objects for optical studies.” The wordplay “brilliant” at once comes to mind because the structural parameters and physical properties of opals make these gemstones not only beautiful decorations but also perfect objects for optical studies. Some opal properties exhibiting the most promise for the study of disorder effects in PhCs are as follows.
