Around 34% of the world’s ewe-milk production, some 2.8 million tons, is concentrated in Europe. This production is mainly centered on countries around the Mediterranean, especially Greece, Romania, and Italy, which together account for 72% of all ewe’s milk produced in Europe, followed by Spain, France, and Portugal (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations [FAO] 2010).
