8.1.1 Project Description

To develop the solar-heated jacket, given the product name “IJacket,” a speci’c methodology, Design for Six Sigma (DFSS), was used to optimize results. DFSS is a business and engineering analysis methodology that uses tools to introduce new technology, products, processes, and services to market. It places the focus up-front in the design or engineering process. The goal is to avoid manufacturing or service process problems using systems engineering techniques from the start. DFSS enables this by focusing the team on understanding the voice of the customer (VOC) and the customer’s speci’c requirements that create detailed engineering speci-’cations. The end result is a robust solution that is optimized to reduce the impact of variation. The product or service, as a result, requires fewer adjustments and thus less money is spent correcting problems. The basic idea is to understand customer requirements before production to reduce costly corrective measures.
