ABSTRACT

Chemical substances are everywhere around us, in the environment; in our food, drinks, and clothes; and in the body. Many of these chemical substances are used to improve the quality of our lives. Most of these chemical substances are not harmful to the environment or human health. However, some have the potential to cause harm, in certain doses, and should only be used when the risks are appropriately managed. Chemical substances’ classes and categories are large and numerous. A vast number of different chemical substances are in commercial use over these years, and their numbers are increasing. Many of these chemical substances are considered toxic or otherwise hazardous to animals, humans, and other living beings. Toxic chemicals are associated with a variety of serious health problems, including cancer, brain and nervous system disorders, reproductive disorders, organ damage, as well as asthma. Toxic chemicals that are persistent in the environment and bioaccumulate through the food chain can make exposure during childhood dangerous. Chemicals also can irritate the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. Some chemicals pose signicant safety hazards, such as re or explosion risks.
