ABSTRACT

Patient Selection Proper patient selection is critical to both the safety and efficacy of hepatic resection. One should evaluate the patient’s general state of health, the condition of the liver, and the volume of the future liver remnant to properly assess the risk of general anesthesia, major abdominal surgery, and liver resection. Subcostal and upper abdominal incisions are painful and may result in respiratory splinting and increased pulmonary complications compared to other incisions ( 16 ). For this reason, assessment of the patient’s ability to mobilize early and ambulate postoperatively must not be underestimated.
