ABSTRACT

Dialkyl carbonates represent a class of functionalized synthetic fluids generally obtained by transesterification of dimethyl carbonate (DMC). The carbonate moiety represents the central core of either a symmetrical or asymmetrical compound depending on whether one or two alcohols are used. The physical properties and chemical reactivity of the dialkyl carbonates strongly depend on the size and shape of the alcohols. Alcohols can be chosen from a wide variety of natural and synthetic alcohols.
