Proteases catalyze the cleavage of amide bonds of proteins producing small oligopeptides or free amino acids, and, thus, these enzymes play a critical role in various cell processes.
The actions of certain proteases within the cell are important in that they are involved in metabolic digestion, complement activation, fertilization, and the production of peptide hormones.
