The biotechnology industry as a whole, and the human therapeutics area in particular, are the subjects of much empirical analysis and description, whose aim is to describe and discuss economic characteristics and overall patterns of success and failure for participating companies. Recently, the advent and recognition of the importance of so-called platform biotechnologies has caused the participants and observers of biotechnology to pay very close attention to various factors of the business arena that affect the development of these platforms. Platform biotechnologies can be

defined as specific technical developments that can be applied to multiple areas and that also spawn supporting mini-industries, and they include novel drug-generation methods and therapeutic modalities which can be applied to multiple diseases. This chapter reviews the historical evolution of combinatorial chemistry as a platform business, examines the economics displayed by this sector, and describes how this platform has influenced and been influenced by the business development of participating companies.
