Chemotherapeutic Treatment Issues in the Elderly
Approximately 50% of all malignancies occur in people over 65 years. Chemotherapy has demonstrated beneﬁcial effects in the treatment of cancer, but it has principally been studied in patients under the age of 65. The question remains, how does chemotherapy affect elderly patients, who are frequently afﬂicted with cancer? In this chapter, we discuss the age-related changes in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics that can alter the outcome of chemotherapy.
