ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the general concept of and approaches to the design of cross-layer optimization in wireless communication systems and presents various cross-layer schemes in Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.16e systems for capacity enhancement, efficient quality of service (QoS) support, and power conservation. It discusses future cross-layer issues for wireless metropolitan area network (MAN) systems that may arise in emerging wireless communication systems. The chapter explains the general concept of cross-layer design in wireless communication systems and provides a survey of various approaches to cross-layer design. It reviews system characteristics to support interlayer operation in the IEEE 802.16e system, which is representative of the wireless MAN system. The chapter analyzes various cross-layer schemes in IEEE 802.16e systems for capacity enhancement, efficient QoS support, and power conservation. It highlights cross-layer issues for future wireless MAN systems by presenting the principle technologies in emerging systems, such as mobile multihop relay in wireless MAN and beyond 3G systems.
