Semiaquatic Bugs (Gerromorpha)

The infraorder Gerromorpha comprises eight families (Mesoveliidae, Hebridae, Paraphrynoveliidae, Macroveliidae, Hydrometridae, Hermatobatidae, Veliidae, and Gerridae). About 150 genera and 1670 species are included in these eight families, of which the most species-rich are the Veliidae (720 species) and the Gerridae (620 species) (N. M. Andersen 1982a, and unpublished). For the last mentioned family, modern taxonomic revisions are available for the primarily Holarctic genera

Aquarius

(Andersen 1990),

Gerris

(Andersen 1993a), and

Limnoporus

(Andersen and Spence 1992), for the Old World genera

Limnogonus

and

Neogerris

(Andersen 1975), including the Oriental genera

Metrocoris

(Chen and Nieser 1993) and

Ventidius

(Chen and Zettel 1999). The Trepobatinae have recently been reviewed by Polhemus and Polhemus (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996) and the Australian gerrids by Andersen and Weir (1994, 1997, 1998).
