ABSTRACT

In the United States, the annual incidence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is 1 per 1000 persons. Higher incidences are found in the age groups 15-24 years and 75 years or older (1). However, these data underestimate the true incidence of TBI because only patients dying before admission to the hospital and those admitted to the hospital are included. Prevalence estimates range from 2.5 to 6.5 million individuals living with the consequences of TBI.
