Different reasons stimulate advances in catalyst preparation. A personal view will be proposed, based on the longstanding interest of the author in catalyst preparation, but perhaps also with some bias due to another strong interest, actually in selective and complete oxidation reactions. Some aspects will be examined in some detail, considering scientific possibilities as well as the chemical engineering aspect.
