Productivity and Discomfort in Assembly Work: The Effects of an Ergonomic Workplace Adjustment at Philips DAP
As mentioned in Chapter 9, two major issues play a role in manual assembly operations: reducing discomfort as a precursor to health problems and increasing productivity. In this project the engineering department and the workforce adapted the production lines several times. Several tools such as simulation software were used, and at first sight the work stations looked very good at Philips DAP, where the project was taking place (Fig. 10.1). Nevertheless, experienced ergonomists who investigated the production line assumed that the work stations could be even further improved. This chapter describes the effect of this improvement on productivity and discomfort.
