A Theory on Pressure Distribution and Seat Discomfort
As described in Chapter 2, pressure distribution has a clear relationship with discomfort during sitting. It is among all objective measurement techniques, it is perhaps the most convincing (Looze et al. 2003). Several studies are concerned with this relationship (Ebe and Griffin 2000; Ebe and Griffin 2001; Kamijo et al. 1982; Park and Kim 1982; Vergara and Page 2000). This chapter describes a theory of how this relationship can be explained. The relationship is developed based on years of research at Waseda University and ErgoSeating Co., Ltd. In particular, the change in pelvis angle and body pressure distribution and their relationship will be described in this chapter, and an explanation for the importance of pressure distribution will be given.
