ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a review of tools and approaches for sensing and using signals from speech, eye movements, head movements, and upper limb movements to operate devices. The focus is on the functional performance characteristics of these movements, which in turn sets limits as to their possible use as signals for controlling devices. It is seen that each of the motor modes of speech, eye and head movements, and arm-based signals have the possible strengths and weakness, and examples of their use are presented.
