ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some of the recognized and emerging human factors and ergonomics issues for health care professionals. Two known major issues, and the subjects of numerous studies, are medical errors and physical injuries, particularly injuries related to patient handling. Other issues are increasing in importance as the demographics of health care professionals and the nature of medical care both change. One of these emerging issues is disability among and aging of individuals employed in health care professions, and another is medical care that is increasingly frequently being administered in the home. These changes introduce new ergonomics challenges for health care professionals.
