ABSTRACT

The science and technology of remotely acquired data and information, often termed remote sensing, is not a new, emerging research theme per se, but rather a theme that offers new potential for research and development in many innovative directions. The remote sensing area is an increasingly significant portion of geographic information science (GIScience). The increased capabilities of sensing from remote aerial and satellite platforms have increased the potential for surveillance that impinges on the constitutional rights of individual privacy. University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS) desires to have a role in the formulation of science and technology policy for the nation. A more directed focus on the field of remote sensing will foster internal UCGIS research coordination efforts, while improving the comprehension of UCGIS capabilities by the outside community. The UCGIS was formed to focus university interdisciplinary research and educational efforts on major national issues of GIScience.
