Molecular Conductance Junctions: A Theory and Modeling Progress Report

The disciplinary area of molecular electronics is concerned with electronic phenomena that are controlled by the molecular organization of matter. The two simplest thematic parts of this research world are molecular wire junctions (in which an electrical current between two electrodes is modulated by a single molecule or a few molecules that form a junction) and molecular optoelectronics (in which a molecule or complex multimolecular structure acts either as a light-emitting diode producing light from electrical input or as a photo-conversion device producing electrical output from incident photons). Several of the fundamental problems and attributes of these systems are the same: they depend on electrical transduction between a continuum electrode and a discrete molecular structure. This fundamental theoretical problem in molecular electronics will be our entire focus in this chapter.
