The aim of this chapter is to introduce the reader to the universe of experimental approaches available for the genetic study of emotionality, the focus being on the use of animal models. First, some preliminary conceptual issues will be discussed and then an overview of the main methods of measuring and interpreting the socalled emotional behaviors will be presented. Finally we present the classical and modern strategies to determine the genetic basis of variance in emotionality-related traits.
