Dietary requirements for ascorbic acid by warmwater fish

ByR. T. Lovell

Blom and Dabrowski14 provided evidence that the highest quality of eggs and spermatozoa were produced in rainbow trout when a dietary level of vitamin C eight-to ten-fold higher than the growth requirement was fed. Japanese parrot fish (Oplegnathus fasciatus) showed greater tolerance to intermittent hypoxic stress when fed a diet with 300 mg than 75 mg of vitamin C per kg which was sufficient for preventing deficiency. Nitrite-induced methemoglobin concentrations were lower in channel catfish fed a diet containing 8000 mg ascorbic kg1 than in fish fed a diet containing 63 mg ascorbic acid kg1.
