ABSTRACT

Processed foods Martin and Laura were given a class assignment to interview an older person (someone over fifty-five) about what America was like in the 1960s and 1970s, particularly with respect to food. Martin interviewed his mom, who was born in 1961 and grew up in the 1970s; Laura talked to her grandfather, who was born just after World War II. Martin’s mom told him all the houses were small but tidy, the yards well kept. All the moms stayed at home and cooked delicious meals, and all the fathers knew best. Politics seemed much simpler then, at least until the Vietnam War came along. Laura’s grandfather commented on watching the World Series in the afternoon when everyone was at work and there were far fewer football games on TV. They both said the music was much better back then; you could hum the melodies and understand the words. Martin’s mom loved the BeeGees; Laura’s grandfather spoke of some guys called the Beatles and the Beachboys.
