ABSTRACT

Quality assurance Nolan grew up in the city and thought it would be cool to spend spring break with his friend Greg on his dairy farm. At first he enjoyed the drive through the countryside, the fresh air and the fresh, home-cooked meals. He thought it was pretty dull in the evenings though, and he wasn’t really eager to get up so early to milk cows. Greg’s dad urged him to try some raw milk, assuring him that there was “nothing like it for flavor and nutrition!” Greg seemed to enjoy it, so although he resisted at first, Nolan finally got up his courage late in the week and drank a whole glass. It was rich and full-flavored. It sure didn’t taste like any kind of milk he had ever tried before. It wasn’t as great as Greg’s dad claimed, but he could see how you could come to really like it. The next morning he was sick with stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and a fever. He was sure it was the milk, but Greg and his dad insisted that all that talk about the only safe milk being pasteurized milk was hogwash. They had been drinking raw milk all their lives and they never got sick! It took Nolan about three days to recover. He now knew what it was like to live on a farm. It might be all right for others, but it was definitely not for him. He’d also steer clear of raw milk, regardless of what Greg said.
