INTRODUCTION Generic drug productsmake up a relatively small proportion of the total pharmaceutical market in Japan. Generic drug products accounted for as little as 17.2% of the market by volume in 2007 and around 6.2% by value. These figures pale in comparison with countries such as the United States, Germany, and the United Kingdomwhere generic product penetration levels are more than half of the total pharmaceutical products volume.
