Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have drawn a lot of attention from the research community in recent years owing to the fact that these networks extend the usability and business potential of various networked devices across the globe and into our daily lives, while mandating an all-the-time availability. To keep such networks always operational, robust network management is needed. The classically perceived purview of network management of monitoring, and maybe controlling a network, tends to be lacking in the sense that WSNs present newness not only in their applications but also in their vulnerabilities to both intrinsic and induced failures. In this chapter, we investigate various network-management aspects that relate to the off-beat aspects of WSNs, particularly in architecture, design, and applications. We substantiate newer dimensions to the classical network-management framework and underpin their significance for emerging application scenarios.
