ABSTRACT

Traditional display classifications and selection guidelines in the human factors literature tend to consider the various types of displays in somewhat isolated terms, especially with regard to sensory modality. Typical approaches either list a multitude of typical displays, along with a set of circumstances for which they are considered appropriate, or list a variety of selection factors, and the type of display recommended for each. With the following taxonomic classification, we present a more generalized view, in which there is considerable commonality in both the selection factors and the resulting types of displays.
