ABSTRACT

Affordance refers to a fundamental relationship in ergonomics — between the user and those elements in the world with which the user interacts during the performance of goal-directed actions. Insofar as the basic problem in ergonomics can be regarded as elucidating the fit between the human being and those things (tools, workplaces, environments) with which he or she interacts (Dainoff and Dainoff 1986; Grandjean 1982), affordances become a conceptual tool for ergonomists to assess goodness of fit.
