ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION A multitude of medical disorders are commonly associated with sleep disturbances, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Impaired sleep clearly worsens quality of life in affected patients, and may aggravate symptoms of the underlying disorder and possibly worsen the underlying disorder's prognosis. This chapter reviews the interactions of sleep and OSA with a variety of medical disorders, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), gastroesophageal reflux (GER), renal disease, acromegaly, hypothyroidism, and cardiovascular disease.
