ABSTRACT
HIPAA is the acronym for The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. HIPAA's roots start in the early 1990s when the Bush Administration called health care leaders together to discuss how to reduce the cost of health care administration. The answer was electronic data interchange (EDI). As the group sharpened its focus on EDI, it became known as the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI).
