ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION Diabetes is described as a global epidemic of the 21st century. In 2007 over 246 million people were affected by diabetes, and this figure is estimated to rise to a total of 380 million by 2025. As a consequence, complications related to diabetes, including retinopathy, cardiovascular disease, nephropathy, and diabetic foot disease, are also on the rise.
