Abstract

The potential value of the use of proteomic technology in the discovery of biomarkers will be described. The example of an experiment to demonstrate this utility using the antibiotic, gentamicin, in rats is discussed. In the discovery of biomarkers in this way, experimental rigor, and the comparison with conventional methods, e.g., histopathology, is paramount. The sensitivity of the proteomic approach is shown by the identification of potential biomarkers of gentamicin toxicity in the serum at lower doses than any changes were seen by conventional means.
