ABSTRACT

Anaerobic metabolism is an ineffective means of energy production in the brain and is tolerated poorly. If the oxygen supply is interrupted, consciousness is lost within a few seconds (6). Eventually, anoxic neurons undergo cell death by necrosis and apoptosis. Below a CBF of 15-20mL=100 g=min, the electroencephalogram (EEG), which reflects the electrophysiological activity of the brain, is isoelectric. Irreversible brain damage occurs at CBF of 10mL=100 g=min.
