The Role of Mitochondria in MDS

ByNorbert Gattermann

A role for mitochondria in the pathophysiology of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) has been suspected for several years. However, it has been difficult to tell whether any of the observed mitochondrial changes in hematopoietic tissues from MDS patients are closely related to the primary cause of these syndromes, or merely represent participation of mitochondria in the apoptotic activity of MDS bone marrow cells (see chap. 5).
