ABSTRACT

Availability Verification (AV) and Suitability Verification (SV) have been perfonned to assure that the Human-System Interface (HSI) features accommodate the various issues such as the Advanced Control Room (ACR) issues, Human Engineering Discrepancies (HEDs) from the Research & Development (R&D) stages, and questions or comments by a regulatory body. Human Factors Engineering (HFE) evaluations were well integrated into the overall design process and the associated design activities were completed before carrying out the verification activities. Several HFE evaluations for the HSI design have been iteratively perfonned along with design activities and the perfol111ance-based evaluations (i.e., situation awareness, workload, team interaction, etc.) were perfonned to verify that the HSI design fully supports safe operation of the

plant. This approach allows us to reduce the project risk of new design features by ensuring no serious problems encountered in the early design stages and pennitting enough time for improving the HSI design.
