ABSTRACT
The human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) causes the most prevalent maternal infection transmitted to the fetus, often with adverse consequences for the unborn child. Those consequences may be severe or mild, starkly evident at birth or becoming manifest later in life. Because of those sometimes subtle late effects in infancy and childhood, one of us has called HCMV the “changeling demon” [1].
